Cerumen more commonly known as earwax is a brown or yellow waxy or flaky substance secreted in the ear canal.
Cerumen protects the skin, assists in lubrication, and provides protection against bacteria, fungi, and foreign bodies. Most of the time the ear canals are self-cleaning. However, wax can become impacted through means such as excessive wax production, use of in ear headphones, hearing aids and Q tips. If this becomes an issue you may need to soften the wax by using an eyedropper to apply a few drops of baby oil or mineral oil in your ear canal every day for 1-2 weeks. After the drops have been applied manual flushing of your ears can be done to clear any wax buildup. If the issue persists please contact your general practitioner or hearing care provider to receive professional cerumen management.
